The Kardashian family is of Armenian descent, although Kim's grandfather was born in the United States. Her paternal great-grandfather was born near the then Armenian, now Turkish, small town of Kars in the village of Karakale. Her parents belonged to an ecstatic sub-group of the Molokan Orthodox Christian community. Kim Kardashian's father, celebrity attorney Robert Kardashian (1944-2003), was a close confidant of former football player and actor O.J. Simpson and a member of the defense team at the latter's murder trial. Her mother, Kris Jenner (formerly Kris Kardashian), comes from a long-time American family of mixed English-Scottish-Irish-German-Dutch roots. Kim Kardashian is one of Caitlyn Jenner's stepdaughters.

Kardashian first became known in 2007 through a private sex video released by Vivid Entertainment Group, which shows her together with singer Ray J.
