Amalaratna "Amala" Zandile Dlamini (born October 21, 1995 in Los Angeles, California), better known by her stage name Doja Cat, is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. After the release of her debut album, she succeeded with the single Mooo! and the accompanying YouTube video of one of the most famous memes of 2018. She also made her commercial breakthrough in 2020 with her second studio album Hot Pink and in particular the number one single Say So.
Dlamini was born in Los Angeles in 1995 to South African actor Dumisani Dlamini and Jewish-American artist Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer. Dumisani Dlamini is known for his roles in the musical film Sarafina! and the controversial youth series Yizo Yizo and fell in love with Sawyer during a stay in the US, with whom he has another daughter. By her own account, Amala grew up without her father.
Doja Cat’s height, weight, body measurements and eye color are quite curious.
As a child, she moved to New York City with her mother, where she spent some time in an ashram. The family later returned to Los Angeles. From a young age, Dlamini received ballet, tap and jazz dance and piano lessons. She was also enthusiastic about skateboarding and surfing. She started breakdancing and popping at the age of ten and was part of various dance crews until she was in high school. At the age of 14 she gave make-up tutorials via YouTube, but stopped doing it again at the request of her mother. She eventually dropped out of school in eleventh grade and started rapping.
After she started regularly releasing her own songs on SoundCloud and YouTube under the name Doja Cat, a Facebook friend introduced her to DJ Yeti Beats. The 17-year-old signed with the Kemosabe label of the well-known producer Dr. Luke got her first record deal. Released in 2014 with Purrr! her first EP, the single So High, brought her attention for the first time.
Her first studio album, the self-titled Amala, was released in March 2018 and, despite three single releases, has not yet achieved the desired success. Four months later, she released the single Mooo!, which, along with the music video, became a viral hit and her breakthrough. The video feels like comedy duo Tim & Eric "shot a PETA commercial entirely from hentai clips," according to the Los Angeles Times, and features Doja Cat in a cow costume dancing, rapping and eating rhythmically in front of a green screen. To date, the video has generated more than 90 million clicks on YouTube and brought the young artist to the attention of influential culture and youth magazines such as Noisey and The Fader. As a result, Amala was re-released in a deluxe version in early 2019, which was released alongside Mooo! which includes two new singles Tia Tamera (featuring Rico Nasty) and Juicy.
